A fuel storage tank by description is simply a safe container for flammable liquids. Though it is also used to refer to a part of an engine system in which the fuel is stored and propelled (fuel pump) or released (pressurized gas) into an engine. Fuel tanks range in size and complexity from the small plastic tank of a butane lighter to the multi-chambered cryogenic Space Shuttle external tank.
There are basically two categories that most type of tanks fall under:
- Underground storage tanks – These are able to suit large capacities of fuel and are supplied with all the necessary overfill valves, access chambers, entry fittings and ground covers. Underground oil tanks are made of steel or produced in polyurethane as bunded oil tanks. Bunded oil tanks are excellent for underground applications because they have a larger secondary containment tank within (or bund); reducing the odds of expensive oil clean ups when the tank is replaced. Very specific Environmental regulations have to be followed when installing such a tank.
- Above ground storage tanks – The less expensive alternative to underground storage units, these include a wide variety like the horizontal or vertical cylindrical tanks, rectangular units, bunded tanks, stainless steel tanks, portable tanks etc. These tanks require less maintenance because of the materials they are made with, which are usually durable heavy-duty plastic and steel. They are usually held up on a non-flammable base usually made of concrete so the tank is always upright.
Factors such as the location of the fuel storage, amount of space available, the capacity of fuel and type of fuel to be stored all need to be considered carefully before deciding on a type of storage unit either for commercial or domestic purposes.
